Kyle Busch Holds The Final Wild-Card Spot Heading into Richmond
With a solid 6th place finish after leading 66 laps in the first half of the 325-lap race Sunday night, Kyle Busch is one more solid race away from locking himself into the Chase for the Sprint Cup.
Kyle Busch exits the Atlanta Motor Speedway weekend holding onto the final wild-card spot for the Chase by 12-points over 13th place Jeff Gordon, who came ever-so-close to basically locking himself into the chase.
Jeff Gordon had a win in his sights but couldn't pull off a final turn pass on Denny Hamlin in a tense green-white-checkered finish.
Coming into this past weekend the race for the final wild-card spot was full of a gigantic gaggle of drivers, Carl Edwards was one of those drivers involved in the gaggle, but has been basically erased from any chance of making the chase for the cup as his motor in the No. 99 Roush Fenway Racing machine faltered late into Sunday night's race.
Edwards has now gone winless since March of last season and for him to make the chase he must win next Saturday in Richmond, and have Kyle Busch along with Jeff Gordon finish very poorly.
Edwards has a next to nothing chance of making the chase.
Ryan Newman also had his chase chances damaged late Sunday evening, he was caught up in a wreck involving Jimmie Johnson and Sam Hornish Jr. with under 5o laps remaining making it a must win weekend next week in Richmond for Newman to make the chase.
Kyle Busch, Jeff Gordon, Marcos Ambrose and Joey Logano all have the best chance of attaining the final wild-card for the Chase for the Sprint Cup.... well Kyle Busch and Jeff Gordon do
