Kenseth wins at Kansas
With the fast, smooth new surface at Kansas Speedway your winner is Matt Kenseth wins his 3 career win of this season.
The recent repave cluttered Sunday's race with a record 14 cautions, a season high in the Sprint Cup Series and contributed to issues that affected at least four title contenders. But the standings looked much the same when Matt Kenseth took the checkered flag in a battered Ford that he banged hard into the wall midway through the race.
Kenseth still managed to drive it to his second victory in three races, while Brad Keselowski dodged accident after accident to hang onto his seven-point lead over Jimmie Johnson in the standings with four races remaining in the Chase.
"I was thinking, 'Man, this has to be entertaining for everybody to watch,'" Kenseth said. "There was a lot of wild stuff happening."
That was an understatement Sunday, when the longest green-flag run was 35 laps early in the race. Some of the cautions were caused by tire problems, others were for single-car spins, including Chase drivers Johnson, Tony Stewart and Greg Biffle.
And, Danica Patrick wrecked herself when she intentionally wrecked Landon Cassill.
"You know, everybody has been asking all season long where the cautions have been," Keselowski said. "Well, they flew to Kansas and they've been hanging out here because there was caution after caution."
Biffle's spin ended his day with a hard crash into the wall.
"I lost it, man. It got away from me off of four and we wrecked it," said Biffle, who dropped five spots in the standings to 11th. "I had no indication, no little wiggle, no sideways. It just got away from me and it killed our day."
Johnson, who led 44 laps early, was far luckier.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Day One Testing from Kansas Complete
From: Kansas Speedway
As the excitement builds for this weekend’s Hollywood Casino 400, the first time to see NASCAR Sprint Cup Series cars on track was delayed due to weather but that didn’t dampen the anticipation for the newly reconfigured track to make its debut.
“The track is a lot different now than when we left from the tire test,” said NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Matt Kenseth. “It seems like it’s getting faster.”
NASCAR driver Trevor Bayne concurred.
“I didn’t know what to expect because I wasn’t here for the tire test,” said Bayne, who will be competing in both the Hollywood Casino 400 and the Kansas Lottery 300 this weekend. “We picked up speed pretty fast… I think the track is just going to keep getting faster all weekend. The track is pretty awesome. I think it’s going to be fun to race on.”
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series testing resumes tomorrow morning at 8:30 AM, with NASCAR Nationwide Series cars taking to the track at 1 PM. Admission is free, but Kansas Speedway is requesting a donation to March of Dimes Bikers for Babies. Parking lots and gates open at 8 AM.

Kyle Busch Driving Halloween M&M’s Scheme at Kansas
From: Joe Gibbs Racing
Kyle Busch will be driving the No. 18 M&M’s Halloween Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR), might welcome the drastic change to the track surface as much as anyone. With an average finish of just 20.0 in his previous 10 visits to Kansas in a Sprint Cup car, which includes just two top-10 finishes, Busch feels there is nowhere to go but up.

Farmland on Almirola’s No. 43 at Kansas
From: Richard Petty Motorsports
Aric Almirola and the No. 43 Farmland team head to Kansas Speedway a couple days early this week to participate in a two-day test on the newly repaved track. But there's one "test" that this partnership has already passed - that together they can raise awareness for hunger relief.
The Farmland Foods paint scheme on Almirola's Ford Fusion marks the success of "Bacon a Difference," a summer-long campaign that raised funds for Harvesters-The Community Food Network. With each package of Farmland bacon purchased from Memorial Day to Labor Day in the Kansas City area, Farmland pledged to donate 4.3 cents to the area food bank, with a minimum donation of $43,000. Total funds raised will be announced by Farmland, Harvesters and race team owner Richard Petty at a special event on Thursday in Kansas City, Mo.
In addition, Farmland has already pledged to double the donation if Almirola wins Sunday's Hollywood Casino 400 at the 1.5-mile oval. The driver has as good a shot as anyone in the field, with the racing surface being new to everyone. Almirola has one previous Sprint Cup start at Kansas Speedway before the repave - a 23rd-place finish in April of this season. He's coming off a 12th-place finish at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway last weekend, where his fast Ford Fusion ran in the top 15 the entire race.
Black & Decker on Ambrose’s #9 at Kansas
From: Richard Petty motorsports
Marcos Ambrose will have a new look on his Richard Petty Motorsports Ford Fusion when he rolls onto the track at Kansas Speedway this week. Black & Decker will be featured as the primary partner on the No. 9 for this weekend's 400-mile event, marking the first of a four-race partnership this season.
The No. 9 car will showcase two Black & Decker products that will be launching this fall-the all-new GYRO TM Screwdriver and the MATRIX TM Quick Connect System TM. Gyro is the world's first motion-activated screw driver that controls variable speed and direction- an industry-first for a screwdriver. The Matrix Quick Connect System is an innovative modular tool system built around two different power units and interchangeable attachments to drill, cut, sand, and more.
Black & Decker will also adorn the No. 9 Ford at Martinsville, Phoenix and Homestead-Miami this season.
RCR has high hopes for new hire
Richard Childress Racing has hired Dr. Eric Warren as its new director of competition in hopes to find some speed again.
Warren will be replacing Kent Day, who served in an interim role after Scott Miller left the company last September for Michael Waltrip Racing. Ever since Miller left the organization all three Cup teams have struggled dearly.
Richard Childress Racing has yet to find victory lane this season on the Cup side and barring a miracle, they will finish out the year winless. Out of the three Cup teams, Kevin Harvick was the sole RCR driver to qualify for the Chase, and with five races remaining he's realistically no chance of winning the title.
Warren started at RCR on Monday.

No. 29 Team Honoring Fallen Soldier at Kansas
From: Richard Childress Racing
The No. 29 Budweiser team will wear a special memorial bracelet in honor of fallen soldier, Army Specialist Chris Horton this weekend at Kansas Speedway. Horton, a sniper in the 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team of the Oklahoma National Guard, was killed during a tour of duty in Afghanistan on Sept. 9, 2011. His wife Jane shares his killed-in-action bracelet with others to remind people of her late husband and all of the soldiers who have lost their lives while serving our country.
Should Star Drivers Participate in Tire Tests?
In the midst of Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s stunning decision to remove himself from his Hendrick Motorsports #88, I wonder why he was ever in the test car to begin with.
Earnhardt suffered his first concussion when he crashed during an August 29th tire test at the newly repaved Kansas Speedway, he didn't tell anybody at the time because he feared of being taken out of the car just as the Chase for the Cup was revving up, Jr.'s second concussion occurred on the final lap at Talladega when his #88 Chevy was gobbled into a 25-car pile-up.
Should NASCAR's most popular driver, or any star driver, for that matter, be participating in tire tests? It wasn't even a race that produced his first concussion, it was a tire test at Kansas Speedway -- a track where the series races on this weekend -- that has sidelined NASCAR's most recognized driver for at least two weeks, if not more.
The hit Dale Earnhardt Jr. took at Talladega after his #88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevy was sucked into a hurricane of cars was a very non-violent type of impact, not the type of crash that usual would cause a concussion, but since he already had a concussion a month and a half earlier it made him much more prone to a repeat head injury.
Why was the face of NASCAR testing tires at Kansas Speedway anyways? You could send start and park drivers or drivers who are on the cusp of being out of the sport -- not that their lives are less important -- to participate in tire testing. Goodyear would acquire the equivalent data from a lesser-known driver as they did on August 29th from little E.
When Hollywood shoots movies with million-dollar actors, they use stunt actors for scenes that are dangerous instead of risking their star actor or actresses from getting hurt during the shoot, that same effect should be applied to tire testing. You don't see Harrison Ford swinging from the trees or participating in other sophisticated scenes when his movies were in the making.
Drivers like Darrell Wallace Jr. and Ryan Blaney or a driver who is trying to make their mark in the sport should be participating in these tire tests, I'm not saying their lives are less important than Jr's, but having Jr. and other big-name drivers engaging in tire tests has more risk than award. The tire test basically abolished his championship chances, and I bet his sponsors aren't to pleased with this situation, not to mention race fans, who may not buy tickets to this week's race at the Kansas Speedway because of his absence.
Rick Hendrick can't be pleased either. Hendrick had to find a driver to fill in for his million-dollar man, if I was Hendrick, I would never allow any of my drivers to participate in a tire test again.
I'm glad Dale Earnhardt Jr. had the guts take himself out of the action to heal. We're dealing with a scary situation here that can be life threatening. I wish Jr. a speedy recovery and hope he can be back soon.
Kansas Speedway Hauler Parade Info
Due to the testing schedule at the Kansas Speedway this week, there is no hauler parade scheduled for the Kansas Area. Wednesday and Thursday are days of testing that are free and open to the public.
KANSAS SPEEDWAY NAMES GRAND MARSHALS, HONORARY STARTERS FOR KANSAS LOTTERY 300, KANSAS LOTTERY 98.9
From: Kansas Speedway
An Olympic gold medalist, a Hall of Fame quarterback and a retiring Kansas politician will all be in the spotlight on Oct. 19 and 20 as they take part in the Kansas Lottery 300 and Kansas Lottery 98.9.
Legendary Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame quarterback Len Dawson has been named the Grand Marshal for the Kansas Lottery 300 on Oct. 20. The 1970 Super Bowl MVP, 1968 AFL All-Star game offensive MVP and six-time AFL All-Star led the Dallas Texans/Kansas City Chiefs to three American Football League Championships and a victory in the AFL-NFL World Championship game. He was named NFL Man of the Year in 1973. Dawson, who was a first round draft pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1957, currently works on the Chiefs Radio Network and in 2012 was honored with the Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award for longtime contributions as a sports broadcaster.
Joining Dawson at the Kansas Lottery 300 is 2012 Olympic gold medalist Shannon Vreeland, who will be the Honorary Starter for the race. Vreeland, who hails from Overland Park, Kan., was a part of the gold medal winning 4x200m freestyle swim team with Missy Franklin, Allison Schmitt and Dana Vollmer that set a new Olympic record in the 4x200m freestyle. Vreeland, who is a member of the USA National Team, is currently a member of the University of Georgia Bulldogs swim team, where she has been a member of two of the Bulldogs' NCAA national champion relay teams in the 4x200-yard relay event. She has been named first team All-SEC twice and was named to the SEC's All-Freshman Team after becoming the SEC Champion in the 500 free. Vreeland also recently made the USA Short Course Worlds Team, which will be competing at the Worlds in Turkey this December.
On Oct. 19, former Kansas City Chiefs player Walt Corey has been named Grand Marshal for the Kansas Lottery 98.9. A current member of the Kansas City Chiefs Ambassadors, Corey played linebacker for six years for the Dallas Texans/Kansas City Chiefs and played for the Chiefs in Super Bowl I. After finishing his playing career, Corey moved into coaching and in one of his stops, he spent eight years as the defensive coordinator/linebackers coach with the Buffalo Bills and led them to the top ranked defense in 1988 after the Bills were ranked 24th just two years prior. He was also with the Bills for their four Super Bowl appearances.
Kansas Speaker of the House Mike O’Neal, who will retire in January, will be the Honorary Starter for the Kansas Lottery 98.9. O’Neal is a Hutchinson, Kan. native and was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1984. O’Neal is also a practicing attorney and is a member of the Kansas Bar Association.
Tightrope Walker Nik Wallenda Successfully Navigates High Wire Walk Over Grandstands, Track Before Bank of America 500
From: Charlotte Motor Speedway
Nik Wallenda navigated the 750 feet across the asphalt, from 100 feet above the track surface, with pure ease, carrying on near-constant banter and stopping several times to pump his fist at the crowd during his tightrope walk Saturday at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Wallenda, of the famous “Flying Wallendas” circus family, started from high atop the frontstretch grandstands, wearing a tether that speedway officials required while he was above the audience. As soon as he passed over spectators, though, Wallenda pulled the tether off, continuing his arduous uphill journey to a large crane parked behind Winner’s Circle.
As he reached the end of the 5/8-inch tightrope, Wallenda roused the crowd to “never give up on your dreams.” He was then lowered to the ground amid thunderous cheers and pulled a long-sleeve black-and-gray Dale Earnhardt Jr. T-shirt over his head. Wallenda said it was his tribute to tonight’s missing man.
“It’s a dream of mine; it’s just another dream fulfilled,” Wallenda said. “It’s exciting to be here, and it’s an exciting environment to perform in. All these fans are here to see an amazing race; to be part of that pre-race entertainment is an amazing experience.”
Wallenda said this walk wasn’t as difficult as this summer’s wild, windy journey over Niagara Falls, which was televised live. But that didn’t mean he took the stunt’s success for granted.
“One of the interesting things about what we do, we’ve been doing it for seven generations, 200 years,” Wallenda said. “You can get very complacent. We don’t consider one [stunt] more dangerous than the other, because every one is dangerous. My great grandfather Karl Wallenda lost his life in 1978 doing a walk that was one of the shortest he did in his career. But he still lost his life. So we have to take every one seriously.”
Karl Wallenda died at age 73 during a high-wire walk between two hotels in Puerto Rico.
Even with that knowledge buried deep in his mind, Nik Wallenda never seemed to have an ounce of doubt about his ability to cross the high wire above Charlotte Motor Speedway. He was relaxed as he mounted the rope for his death-defying stunt, keeping his calm even as track workers rushed to pull the support lines taut enough for him.
“It’s really just about staying calm and peaceful,” Wallenda said. “I say a prayer [before the walk], and that’s about it. There’s no rituals, no yoga, nothing like that. I’m just a regular guy; I wear jeans and a T-shirt because I’m just a normal guy. I just happen to do something that’s unique.”
Charlotte Motor Speedway Attendance Info
There was an estimated 100,000 fans at Saturday night's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. 105,000 spectators attended last year's event.

Regan Smith’s night ends with a puff of smoke
It was a weird feeling as driver introductions were announced to the crowd at the Charlotte Motor Speedway, for the first time in 462 races Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s name was not going to be announced over the PA system.
The biggest story hovering over the Charlotte Motor Speedway Saturday was the absence of NASCAR's most popular driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. Instead of Dale Earnhardt Jr. behind the wheel of his #88 Hendrick Motorsports it was the 29-year-old Regan Smith in the driver's seat of the #88.
Smith woke up on Thursday preparing to drive the #51 Phoenix Racing Chevy for James Finch. He was instead granted a golden opportunity to shine in the spotlight as he was picked to fill in for the sidelined Earnhardt.
This isn't the first-time Regan Smith had been in the bright lights of the media spotlight. Just last season, he outran Carl Edwards to the checkered flag to win the Southern 500 at the Darlington Raceway while driving for Furniture Row Racing.
Furniture Row Racing's only win to this day.
Smith started from the 26th starting position Saturday evening and quickly came storming to the front of the pack -- cracking the top-ten by lap 40 -- and while doing so passed his former Furniture Row Racing ride that is now driven by Kurt Busch.
However, his great night went up in a puff of smoke on lap 60 as his #88 smoked its way into the garage, and his night was abruptly over.
Smith had to accept a 38th place finish.
"Well, I felt a really fast race car", a disappointed Regan Smith said in the garage area. Smith went on to say he had no warning sign before the engine went south, and he appreciated all of the support he's been granted this weekend.
Regan Smith will have at least one more shot next weekend in Kansas to show his ability with a powerhouse team.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. will miss next two races
Dale Earnhardt Jr. will miss the next two Sprint Cup races to recover from a concussion diagnosed Wednesday and suffered in the last-lap crash Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway.
Earnhardt is currently 11th in the Chase for the Sprint Cup standings, but missing the next two races will eliminate him from championship contention. Practice and qualifying at Charlotte is scheduled for today.
Earnhardt said: "he did not feel right after crashing during a tire test at Kansas Speedway on Aug. 29." He said he "did not notify NASCAR or see a doctor, however, because he thought he would be fine and wanted to continue racing."
Earnhardt said he was only “80 or 90” percent during the four races after the Kansas crash, but felt like he was back to 100 percent last week at Talladega.
Regan Smith, who was recently released from Furniture Row Racing, will drive Earnhardt’s No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet at Charlotte Motor Speedway and Kansas Speedway, the team announced early Thursday.
Regan Smith was scheduled to drive Phoenix Racing’s No. 51 car this weekend. AJ Allmendinger is expected to drive the car now, team officials said.

25 car get wrecked and Matt Kenseth take wins
Tony Stewart’s attempt was to hold on for the win Sunday instead sent his car sailing through the field and triggered a 25-car accident at Talladega Superspeedway. Daytona 500 winner Matt Kenseth won under caution, and everyone else was left wondering what happened to cause so much carnage.
Stewart was blocking all over the track, and said he mistakenly chopped across the front of Michael Waltrip’s car to trigger the accident.
The contact hooked Stewart to send him into a spin, and his car lifted into the air and sailed on its roof and then on its side over several other cars.
It created chaos through the pack, which was running three-wide in a frantic dash to the finish.
“I just screwed up. I turned down and cut across Michael and crashed the whole field,” Stewart said. “It was my fault, blocking and trying to stay where I was at.
“I was trying to win the race and I was trying to stay ahead of Matt there and Michael got a great run on the bottom and had a big head of steam, and when I turned down, I turned across the front of his car. Just a mistake on my part but cost a lot of people a bad day.”
Stewart gamely waved to the crowd as he climbed from his battered car, while Jimmie Johnson sat on the ledge of Earnhardt’s window for a lift back to the garage. Everywhere they looked, they saw crumpled cars.
Five-time Talladega winner Earnhardt said enough is enough with the carnage. He was credited with a 20th-place finish that dropped him four spots in the standings to 11th.
“If this was what we did every week, I wouldn’t be doing it,” he said. “I’ll just put it to you that way. If this was how we raced every week, I’d find another job. That’s what the package is doing. It’s really not racing. It’s a little disappointing. It cost a lot of money right there.
“If this is how we’re going to continue to race and nothing is going to change, how about NASCAR build the cars? It’ll save us a lot of money.”

Nationwide Series Won’t Return to Montreal in 2013
The NASCAR Nationwide Series will not return to Montreal in the 2013 season, it was announced Friday afternoon.
The series had gone to the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve six straight years, but NASCAR could not reach an agreement with the track promoter, and it has been scratched from the 2013 campaign.
Kevin Harvick won the first Nationwide Series race at the famed road course. Justin Allgaier was the most-recent winner in Montreal, Quebec.
Bass Pro Shops Sponsoring Stewart in 2013
It was made official Friday afternoon from the Talladega Superspeedway that Bass Pro Shops would indeed sponsor Tony Stewart's #14 Chevy in the 2013 season.
Bass Pros Shops will grace the hood of Tony's#14 for 18 races next season, including the Daytona 500, Mobil 1 will be the primary sponsor on the #14 11 times next season, and that leaves nine races unsponsored for the the 2011 champion team.
