NASCAR, Twitter Form Partnership

Per Mashable, Longtime informal social media buddies Twitter and NASCAR are making things official for next month’s Pocono 400 race. It’s Twitter’s first official partnership with a sports league, and may hint at a larger shift to come for the microblogging platform that has become a hit with sports fans in particular.

The Pocono 400 partnership will revolve around the #NASCAR hashtag, according to a joint press conference Twitter and NASCAR held Friday.

“During the race, we’ll curate accounts from the NASCAR universe and surface the best Tweets and photos from the drivers, their families, commentators, celebrities and other fans when you search #NASCAR on Twitter.com,” reads a post to the official company blog.

Omid Ashtari of Twitter’s business development team called the arrangement “part search algorithm and part editorial,” during Friday’s press conference.

More details about the partnership are expected to be revealed before Pocono happens on June 10.

Why NASCAR? Ashtari said one reason is races draw fans of dozens of drivers at a time, as opposed to just a couple teams, which will give Twitter a chance to experiment and learn rapidly about how to curate tweets and step into a more editorial role.

New Sponsors Abound On All-Star Weekend

Fifth Third Bancorp announced a multi-year marketing partnership with Roush Fenway Racing earlier this week, beginning with four races as primary sponsor of Matt Kenseth's #17 Ford Fusion in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Fifth Third will be the primary sponsor of Kenseth's Ford at four Sprint Cup Series races this season, including Saturday night’s Sprint All Star Race.

Dale Earnhardt, Jr.
The Dale Jr. Foundation will commemorate its five-year anniversary with a special paint scheme on Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s #88 Diet Mountain Dew/National Guard Chevy for the Sprint Cup All-Star race weekend. This marks the fourth consecutive year that Earnhardt Jr.'s primary sponsors have donated their primary space on the #88 Chevy to The Dale Jr. Foundation. The car will feature orange, black and white colors with TDJF's theme, "Driven to Give: 5 Years of Giving" on the hood.

"What The Dale Jr. Foundation has been able to accomplish since we started in 2007 has exceeded my expectations," Earnhardt Jr. said. "Thanks to the generosity of many people, we've been able to make a difference and donate to a lot of great foundations. I'm especially grateful to the folks at Diet Mountain Dew and National Guard who have given the Foundation this paint scheme again. It means a lot to me to have their support."

Richard Petty Motorsports has added a new backer for the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season. The latest addition to the sponsor lineup is Transportation Impact, which will make its NASCAR debut as the primary sponsor of the #43 team and driver Aric Almirola in the Pocono 400 at Pocono Raceway on June 10.

Aric Almirola

Transportation Impact is a parcel spend management firm headquartered in Emerald Isle, NC. The company comes to NASCAR for the first time, to help high-volume parcel shippers reduce cost through innovative audit and negotiation services, helping companies identify and obtain savings they can use to fund new initiatives, retain employees or hire new ones. The company was co-founded by Travis Burt and Keith Byrd; both of whom say they are anxious to work with the team.
"When people see the Richard Petty brand, the first things that come to mind are being the best and doing so with integrity," said Burt. "As a business owner, I always want my company to be the best, but only as long as success doesn't interfere with doing the right thing."
After serving as the primary sponsor of David Ragan's No. 34 Ford at Daytona and Texas, Al's Liner will back theFront Row Motorsports No. 38 Ford driven by David Gilliland in Saturday's Sprint All-Star Showdown.
Clayton Tomasino, President and Owner of Al's Liner and Scorpion Coatings commented on his company picking up an additional race, saying, "NASCAR has been a great B2B tool for us so far. Front Row Motorsports is a terrific partner for our Al's Liner and Scorpion Brands. We will be pulling for David Gilliland to race his way into the All-Star Race and join teammate David Ragan."

David Ragan
Racing into the All-Star Race is the goal for Gilliland, who finished eighth in last year's Showdown. "Being a part of the All-Star Race would be very special to me. I'm happy to have Al's Liner and Scorpion on board this weekend. Our No. 38 Ford team has had strong runs the past two weekends. Making it into the All-Star Race would really give this team some momentum heading into the summer stretch of the schedule."

David Ragan, meanwhile, will pilot the No. 34 U.S. Shredder Ford in this Saturday's NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race. Ragan said he is happy to be racing at Charlotte again, a track where he has posted three career Top-10 finishes, including a victory in last season's Sprint All-Star Showdown and an eighth-place effort in last year's NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race.

"Charlotte has been a good track for me throughout my career,” said Ragan. “I had a strong showing here last season in both the All-Star Race and the 600. We are still working to take our intermediate program at Front Row up to the next level, but Charlotte is a track where Fords and Roush Yates Engines have been strong."

The race will mark U.S. Shredder's first foray into NASCAR. The company, which headquarters its sales team in Trussville, Alabama, noticed Ragan's strong run two weeks ago at Talladega and decided to come on board. "We saw David and Front Row Motorsports running well, and that there was space available on David's car. We contacted Front Row Motorsports and are glad we could work something out," said President, Bill Tigner.

U.S. Shredder is a supplier of equipment and parts to the Scrap Industry. The company supplies equipment, parts, castings, wear parts and service to essentially any aspect of the Scrap Metal Recycling Industry throughout the world. The industry is a $180 billion dollar per year industry and directly employs over 137,000 workers. The company is a member of the ISRI, the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, which U.S. Shredder has invited to share space on the hood of the No. 34 car.

Tony Stewart
Jamie McMurray’s No. 1 Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet is sport a new look for Saturday night’s Sprint Showdown at Charlotte, trading in its familiar orange livery  for a white-and-camouflage paint scheme with orange numbers.
The National Wild Turkey Federation and its flying turkey logo will grace the quarter panels of Tony Stewart’s No. 14 Stewart Haas Racing Chevy in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series All-Star Race. The NWTF sponsorship is a part of the Conservation Fund's "Racing for America's Wildlife" program, designed to engage the NASCAR community in conserving America's hunting and fishing heritage through habitat protection, restoration, education, and outreach.
"We are very proud to partner with our good friends at Stewart-Haas Racing and Richard Childress Racing in this tribute to the NWTF and their work in conservation and education," said Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris. "All of us at Bass Pro Shops, SHR and RCR are happy to donate these special paint schemes as a tribute to this great conservation organization and their thousands of grassroots volunteers who are also NASCAR fans."
The NWTF will also appear on Richard Childress Racing's #3 Chevy Silverado driven by Ty Dillon in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

Last-minute move "Joey Logano gets win"

As the evening when on at Talladega Joey Logano pushed Kyle Busch all the way to the tri-oval but then snuck out of line to beat Kyle Busch to the finish line to win the Aaron's 312 at the Talladega SuperSpeedway this afternoon.

It just seemed like Kyle Busch was going to hold of all of the competitors breathing down his back at the end of the race today and take Kyle Busch Motorsports to victory lane for the second time this season but he was a pretty much a sitting duck on the last lap of this race much like everybody that is leading the final lap at this racing facility. Restrictor plate tracks are the only track where you really would prefer to be sitting in second place rather than in first place coming to the checkered flag.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. would finish third, Cole Whitt fourth and Dale Earnhardt Jr. fifth.

With Ricky Stenhouse Jr's great finish today and Elliott Sadler's tenth place finish that moves Stenhouse into first place in the points standings. Stenhouse has a five point points lead over Sadler now.

After a horrific crash red flags the race and sends Eric McClure to the hospital, Joey Logano passes Kyle Busch in the last turn at Talladega to win under a green-white-checkered finish..

A very frightening moment happened this afternoon with two laps to go, they had the big one on the backstretch and that collected Eric McClure sending him very hard into the inside wall. One of the hardest hits I have seen in my life but thankfully there was a safer barrier there. The safety workers had to cut away at the racecar to get him out of the car, they put him on a stretcher and transported him via Helicopter to a local hospital. McClure was talking with the safety workers before being removed from the car, but they had no further update on his condition.

Prayers with Erik McClure at this time.
