A.J. Allmendinger Suspended: NASCAR Bans Driver Indefinitely Over Drug Test

NASCAR indefinitely suspended driver A.J. Allmendinger on Tuesday after confirming he violated its substance-abuse policy, putting his career and future with Penske Racing in jeopardy.

The suspension came after a test of his backup urine sample confirmed the original positive result.

Allmendinger originally was suspended July 7 after failing a random drug test taken in late June. His backup "B" urine sample was tested Tuesday by Aegis Analytical Laboratories in Nashville, Tenn.

NASCAR officials announced the result and subsequent suspension Tuesday night.

"While not a pleasant experience by any stretch of the imagination, we feel like we have one of the best drug testing programs in sports," NASCAR spokesman David Higdon said.

Allmendinger on Twitter thanked fans for their support.

"I'm sorry we even have to have this going on. But I promise I will do whatever it takes to get to the bottom of this and get back out there no matter what," he tweeted.

Officials did not announce what substance Allmendinger tested positive for. Allmendinger previously said he tested positive for a stimulant, but did not give specifics. He has denied knowingly taking a banned substance.

"This was not the news we wanted to hear and we will work to get to the source of what may have caused this," said Tara Ragan, Allmendinger's business manager, in a statement.

In a statement, Allmendinger's Penske Racing team acknowledged it had been notified of the test results.

"Penske Racing is very disappointed with the result of the B sample test and will evaluate its course of action as it pertains to AJ over the coming week," the team said.

The team said Sam Hornish Jr. will drive the No. 22 car this weekend at Indianapolis and next weekend at Pocono. Hornish has filled in for Allmendinger in the past two Sprint Cup Series races.

Allmendinger's primary sponsors, Shell and Pennzoil, called NASCAR's process and procedures "appropriate" in a statement.

"We share Penske Racing's disappointment with the result of AJ's B sample test and will work closely with them to determine plans moving forward," the sponsors said. "We hope for the best for AJ during this difficult time."

NASCAR's recovery program includes evaluation by a substance abuse professional to create a "road map" leading to a return to competition. The plan can include anything from counseling to in-house treatment and rehabilitation.

Osborne had run the No. 99 team since 2004, and Edwards took over that ride for the final 13 races of that season.

As were all hearing Osborne is stepping down from being Carl's Crew Chief after on Tuesday, 19 races removed from a disheartening defeat in last year's championship race. due to health issues.

Norris' first role as crew chief at Roush Fenway came in 2005 with the No. 17 Nationwide Series team. In his eight years with Roush Fenway, Norris has led multiple teams to Victory Lane, including Bayne's inaugural Nationwide Series win at Texas Motor Speedway in November 2011.

Chad Norris will take over team immediately weekend of July 29th at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Osborne said: "I have had the pleasure of working with Carl Edwards for the past nine years and, during that time, my focus has been building a championship-caliber program," Osborne said. "I'm proud of the 18 wins we've had together in Sprint Cup Series competition and our two second-place points finishes.

Carl Edwards was going for chase last year and finished 2nd and how hes win-less this season so far.

"We're very fortunate to have Chad Norris as part of our organization to take over for the No. 99," Edwards said. "I've known Chad for a long time and he is a fierce competitor. We've got our work cut out for us over the next seven races, and I've got every confidence Chad can lead our team to where we need to be."

Kasey Kahne wins at New Hampshire for second victory of season

Loudon, N.H. • The best car was rolling toward victory — until its driver and crew chief couldn’t agree on how many tires to change.

Kasey Kahne capitalized on that confusion between Denny Hamlin behind the wheel and Darian Grubb in the pits to win his second Sprint Cup race of the year and make a leap toward one of the 12 spots in the Chase that determines this year’s NASCAR champion.

"For those guys to miscommunicate, that helped us a ton," Kahne said. "I’ll take ’em any way we can."

Hamlin’s Toyota led for 150 of the 300 laps at the one-mile New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sunday. His communication wasn’t quite as good.

Kahne, who finished second two weeks ago at Kentucky to Brad Keselowski, went ahead to stay during a restart on the 240th lap when Hamlin spent extra time in the pits as his crew changed all four tires.

Hamlin wanted just two new ones.

"Darian asked me how much of the tires I felt I’d used up. I felt like I had used up a substantial amount," he said. "[I said] give me tires and no adjustments. He thought I meant four tires. Nothing’s a given. Even though it looked like we had one in the bag if we took two tires, you never know."

Kahne doesn’t feel he stole a victory.

"I wouldn’t say ‘stolen.’ We ran in the top four the whole race," he said. "We were in pretty good shape, [but] if he was to keep the track position, I never would have passed him."

Hamlin’s longer pit stop left him all the way back in 13th place, but he kept passing cars until only Kahne remained in front. Then he simply ran out of miles and Kahne won by 2.738 seconds.

story continues belowstory continues below

It was the 14th win of Kahne’s career and first since May 27 at Charlotte. Clint Bowyer, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Keselowski rounded out the top five.

The victory enhanced Kahne’s chances of qualifying for the Chase, the last 10 races of the season in which the top 10 drivers in the point standings win automatic berths. Two additional spots go to the drivers with the most wins who are ranked 11th to 20th in points.

Sprint Cup is off til July 29th.

Tony Stewart Wins 2012 ‘Best Driver’ ESPY Award

The driver of the No. 14 car Tony Stewart took home the 2012 ESPY for “Best Driver” at the 20th annual ESPY Awards on ESPN. The three-time and reigning NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champ beat out four-time IZOD IndyCar Series champion Dario Franchitti, F1 champion Sebastian Vettel and NHRA champion Del Worsham for the honor.

Last season, Stewart put together an epic Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup in what proved to be one of the most exciting seasons in NASCAR history. He, with the help of his Stewart Haas team, won five of the 10 races in the Chase, narrowly edging out Carl Edwards in the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway to take home the title. It was one of the first times when the points ended up in a tie, and wins during the season served as the tie-breaker.

Here are there of years that Tony Stewart won "Best Driver Of Year"  (2003, 2006 & 2012).

“I want to congratulate Tony on winning the ESPY for ‘Best Driver’ last night,” said NASCAR Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Steve Phelps. “His dramatic run to the championship highlighted his overall performance on the track last season, and we’re thrilled the sports world recognized this achievement. Hats off to Tony Stewart and the entire Stewart-Haas Racing organization.”

Tony Stewart takes win from 42nd spot

There was no fire or rain. Still, another frantic finish at Daytona International Speedway.

Tony Stewart emerged the winner, charging past Daytona 500 winner Matt Kenseth on the last lap and holding on as the challengers stacked up behind him Saturday night in one of Daytona’s trademark wrecks.

“I don’t even remember what happened that last lap,” Stewart said.

Stewart has 18 victories at Daytona, second only to the late Dale Earnhardt’s 34 wins.

None of Stewart’s wins are in the Daytona 500, though. Stewart is 0 for 14 in NASCAR’s biggest race of the year and was a non-factor in February, when the race was delayed a day by rain and then stopped more than two hours for a massive jet dryer fire.

“I wish I could trade a couple of these races in for just one Sunday race in February,” he said of the Daytona 500.

But he’s always strong in the summer race at Daytona, and this visit was no different.

Stewart qualified second but dropped back to 42nd at the start of the race because his time was thrown out by NASCAR after his Chevrolet failed inspection. He quietly rode around — which is his style at restrictor-plate races — and let Roush Fenway Racing teammates Kenseth and Greg Biffle control the front.

The final results showed Jeff Burton came from nowhere to finish second in a Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet, followed by Kenseth in a Ford and Joey Logano in a Toyota.

Stewart teammate Ryan Newman, who was involved in a pit road incident with Kahne and Jeff Gordon, finished fifth. Roush driver Carl Edwards was sixth and was followed by Kahne, Brad Keselowski in a Dodge and Michael Waltrip. Bobby Labonte rounded out the top 10.

Denny Hamlin, who battled a bad back all weekend, raced for the win late but was involved in an accident that dropped him to 25th.

“I could have done without it, that’s for sure,” said Hamlin, who added none of the on-track contact was too rough. “I’ll be 100 percent by next weekend, for sure.”

Biffle, who was in third on the final restart, dropped all the way to 21st and said the accident started when Dale Earnhardt Jr. gave Kevin Harvick a big push, and Biffle turned in front of Harvick.

“He got a hell of a shove off the front of Junior ... I’m like, `It’s impossible that somebody could get into that hole that quick,”’ Biffle said. “But he got squirted off the bumper of (Earnhardt) and shot in there. It was my fault.”

Roughly 90 minutes before the race, NASCAR announced AJ Allmendinger had been suspended for failing a random drug test taken last week at Kentucky. Penske Racing rushed Sam Hornish Jr. in from North Carolina, where he was in the middle of a live television show, to drive Allmendinger’s car. Hornish arrived just minutes before it was time to climb in the car.

“All the way up until the plane took off we didn’t know if we were going to make the race in time,” Hornish said. “I said that I would tell the pilot to fly faster, but I’m pretty sure that he was going to have the throttle pinned the whole way down.”

Hornish said he grabbed a sandwich and tried to hydrate as much as I could. I think I drank 18 bottles of water knowing how hot it was down here.”

He was doing an admirable job until a tire problem caused him to spin, bringing out the first caution just past the halfway point. Hornish finished 33rd, and Penske officials said they’ll meet this week with Allmendinger to get a better understanding of the situation.

“We just cut down a tire and it came apart and tore the car all up,” Hornish said. “I’m disappointed for the guys.”

Stewart, meanwhile, picked up his third win of the season, which ties him for the most in the Sprint Cup Series with Keselowski. The defending series champion has won this race at Daytona four times in his career, all within the last eight years.

The victory made the three-time champion feel much better his chances to defend his title because Stewart feels he has enough wins to ensure a spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

“It’s not a guarantee, but it’s nice to know we’ve got those three wins,” he said. “I would think (the Chase) would be a virtual lock that we have those wins. Hopefully, we won’t have to use them.”

U.S. Army Will Not Renew its Sponsorship with Stewart-Haas Racing

The U.S. Army has decided not to renew its sponsorship with Stewart-Haas Racing in 2013 as a primary sponsor of the No. 39 Chevrolet driven by Ryan Newman due to a reallocation of its marketing budget that will not include a presence in NASCAR.

SHR is actively pursuing a strong brand to partner with the team and its roster of sponsors that also includes Office Depot, Mobil 1, Quicken Loans, GoDaddy.com, Haas Automation, Chevrolet, WIX Filters, Outback Steakhouse, Aspen Dental, Tornados, Coca-Cola, Oreo, Ritz, Bass Pro Shops and Code 3 Associates.

“The U.S. Army has been a great partner of Stewart-Haas Racing since the team’s inception. It has been a mutually beneficial relationship, with the U.S. Army introducing training regimens that improved our pit crews while instilling the mental, physical and emotional strength of the U.S. Army Soldier in all of us. We remain very proud of our representation of the U.S. Army and its brave Soldiers who are 100 percent committed to our country. We will continue to activate on behalf of the U.S. Army for the rest of 2012, while also growing our other dynamic partnerships at Stewart-Haas Racing for the future.”
– Brett Frood, Executive Vice President, Stewart-Haas Racing

“The U.S. Army has worked with Stewart-Haas Racing in a mutually beneficial and highly successful relationship for the past four seasons, and they’ve performed superbly as our partner on and off the track. The same can be said of other members of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series family we have sponsored during the past 10 seasons. The sport, our drivers and the passionate NASCAR fans embraced the Army’s participation and created a tremendous opportunity for Americans to learn more about the profession of the Army Strong Soldier.”
– John Myers, Director, Marketing Support Element, Army Marketing and Research Group

NASCAR Penalizes Three Teams for Infractions at Daytona

NASCAR has issued penalties to three of its race teams as a result of rules infractions committed during last weekend’s events at Daytona International Speedway.
The No. 14 team in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series was found to be in violation of Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4J (any determination by NASCAR officials that the race equipment used in the event does not conform to NASCAR rules detailed in Section 20 of the NASCAR Rule Book); and 20-2.1J (unapproved open vent hose inside of the car). The violation occurred during post-qualifying inspection July 6.

Driver Tony Stewart and owner Margaret Haas have been penalized with the loss of six championship driver and six championship owner points, respectively.

The No. 3 team in the NASCAR Nationwide Series was found to be in violation of Sections 12-1; 12-4J and 20A-2.1J (unapproved open vent hose inside of the car). This violation occurred during post-qualifying inspection on July 6.

Crew chief Danny Stockman has been fined $10,000 and due to the violation of his probation, has been suspended from NASCAR until July 25. Car chief Robert Strmiska has also been suspended from NASCAR competition until July 25 due to the violation of his probation. This past May 1, both Stockman and Strmiska were placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31, for rules violations committed at Richmond International Raceway.

The No. 18 car in the NASCAR Nationwide Series was found to be in violation of Sections 12-1; 12-4J; and 20A-12.8.1(B) (car failed to meet minimum front car heights). This violation occurred during post-race inspection July 6.

Crew chief Adam Stevens has been fined $10,000 and placed on NASCAR probation until Aug. 22. Car chief Christopher Landis has been placed on NASCAR probation until Aug. 22. Owner Joe Gibbs has been penalized with the loss of six championship owner points.

Austin Dillon Wins 1st Nationwide Race at Kentucky

The No. 3 Rookie Austin Dillon finds him self in victory lane after dominating at Kentucky's Feed the Children 300.

Dillon who drivers for hes Grandfather Richard Childress, Claimed the pole earlier that day and poised for a Breakout performance.

Kevin Harvick started on outside of front row with Dillon. Brad Keslowski, Sam Hornish Jr, Riicky Stenhouse Jr. round out top five when green flag drop.

Austin had best car out there in on Saturday night, and some good pit stops.

One name which was primarily missing was Joey Logano. Logano has won five times this season in the Nationwide Series and with the Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series at the same track. It seemed as though there was no doubt that he would participate in Friday's festivities.

There was only two caution throughout the 200 laps event.

But now, Dillon can etch his name into the record books as the fourth first-time winner at Kentucky. Prior to the 22-year-old Dillon, David Gilliland (2006), Stephen Leicht (2007) and the aforementioned Logano (2008) all won their first career Nationwide races at the track.

Now that Dillon has captured his first career Nationwide win, perhaps, the biggest name yet to win is now Danica Patrick.

With Sadler's ninth-place effort, he lost the points lead to Friday's winner—Austin Dillon. The rookie is now just four points behind Sadler in the points standing.

The Nationwide Series will head to Daytona next weekend for the Subway Jalapeno 250. Just like Talladega, Daytona is a crapshoot. Anything can happen, and it will undoubtedly be an exciting race.

We'll find out next Saturday when the green flag will be waved for the first time at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN. Be sure to tune in.
